Luc Bourdon 1987-2008

A few things struck me while watching this compilation. I'd forgotten about his sweet ass last goal that was shot so hard it stuck in the net! I remember hooting and hollering which led Bailey to attack the cat. She's odd that way! Also, he was a powerful skater, with a beautiful stride. He was also the Nucks blue chip tradable prospect. Most imporantly - he was 21 fucking years old, had won two golds for Canada, was an NHLer and rode a god damned motorcycle for a few weeks. What a waste. Love the smile at the end though, RIP lad.

He played hockey well. Big deal; there's been way, way, WAY too much attention given to this person. I can think of at least five nurses I'll mourn more if I ever hear of their deaths; they're real heroes. And, I would have said the same thing before the incident. We, as a species, really have to get our shit together.

The worst thing about Bourdon's death to anyone outside his family is that he just screwed the Canucks out good trade bait. The Canucks should sue his family for his salary, plus a top ten draft pick. Now that would be some real news.

You know....I think there are "heroes" all around us, we each may even be one to somebody. But of course, "normal" people are rarely on TV or well known. Your right it doesn't make any tradgedy befalling so called normals any less sad, and to you, it may be sadder if you were personally invested in their welface (ie. nurses who were really good to you, a family member, a friend, someone who directly has affected you, your loved ones, your community etc), but it also doesn't make Bourdon's death any less sad.

If I had read about some random kid killed at age 21 in a freak motorcycle accident who DIDN'T play hocket and didn't do much of anything outside of normal 21 year old antics, I have to say I'm certain I would feel just as bummed about that loss as I do about Bourdon's. But you don't hear about the regular folks and therefore don't have a chance to mourn them.

That all being said, I think you were a wee bit harsh in your comment. Maybe all the publicity about a hockey player killed in an accident will make other young men or women a little bit more cautious next time they hop on their bikes and go for a ride. I don't think mourning a celebrities death is silly, nor do I think that all the attention it gets is a bad thing. In todays world so many people seem to be more effected by what they see on TV or hear on the radio or read on the internet than they are by their so-called "real lives" so maybe giving attention to something like this can save someone else, can make them think.

I dunno......just feel a little sad about it all myself I guess.

I still say sue the family for reparations.
