I'm pretty confident that this has nothing to do with psychology but rather has to do with probability and specifically binomial options. On each "move" you have to move the specific number of times that he specifies and you only have a limited number of options. Each time he stops he's essentially determined which square/stickie you could NOT be on regardless of where you start -- again based on the number of moves and where you could possibly go. Eventually, you're forced into fewer and fewer choices and your options are limited so that eventually, there's really no where for you to be but on the happy face! Haven't done the math but pretty sure that's what's going on.
